Question:
When I submit a letter of resignation, I often feel guilty
enough to consider a counteroffer. Why does this happen?
Often
when you receive an opportunity or actively decide that
it is time for a change of job, you become emotionally entwined
on a subconscious level. This transition can be a time of
reflection and, if channeled and used properly, can be a
chance to analyze why you are open to this opportunity.
Your
employer may extend a counteroffer in a last ditch effort,
so to speak, to retain you. As we see it, counteroffers
really just buy time …you are upset that your employer
will now offer acceptable working conditions once you have
given notice and your employer really doesn’t want
you around if you really do not want to work there.
Usually the same issues that tempted you
to look for a new job begin to creep up again if they are
not resolved in a reasonable amount of time. Staff almost
always try to influence you to rethink their situation because
they are concerned about “what’s going to happen
to me?” rather than “good luck to you”.
When a candidate goes through a job search and decides the
offer is worth accepting we suggest that a candidate submit
their letter of resignation; put processes in place within
their current employer and move on.
Question:
How do you decide if you want to work with an executive
search firm?
Even if you are comfortable in your current
position, you should always make the time to speak with
an executive recruiter! Ask the recruiter to tell you a
little about their own experiences working with professionals
like you. The key to career success is finding an executive
search firm that will listen to your needs. Be sure that
this firm is selective with the organizations it represents
and that the position being discussed offers valid career
development.
An
executive recruiter should be able to review your “career
milestones” and provide you with a good overview of
an organization prior to any interview. Then, depending
on how the process evolves, will negotiate your compensation
package and follow your career in the future. |
